13 Epic Tips For The Perfect Beach Performance

Come summer and vacation, you’ll hopefully be spending long days in the sun, be it at the beach or by the pool. Since we live so close to the Pacific and because we travel to the tropics a lot, we spend most of our time at the beach. Whether it’s for tanning, reading in the sun, surfing, playing beach volleyball, or just having fun with friends, our lifestyle is super active. The last thing we stress is about how we look without hair every in place, or if my makeup is smudged.

Looking beach-ready takes some planning beforehand for both men and women alike but we’re here to help making your preparation as easy as possible. Here are some tips, tricks and suggestions for how to stay beautiful this summer without worrying about your style keeping up with you. Do it the Behlster Way — have fun in the sun and look amazing while you do it!

Confidence, Baby!

First of all: Never let insecurity about your body bum your hang-loose beach feeling. Walk tall, pay attention to posture, and always wear your prettiest smile. A happy, positive facial expression radiates inner beauty and that outshines everything else.

It’s All About The SPF

If you want beautiful, healthy skin, you have to protect your skin all year round, not just by the time summer rolls around and the temperatures start getting warm. Sun-damaged skin isn’t hot at all, so lather up on sun screen and products that contain SPF like lotions and lip balms for beautiful skin to show off at the beach.

Tinted Foundation

Again: If you’re spending many hours in the sun, protecting your skin should be one of your highest priorities, so why not swap your usual foundation for a tinted moisturizer that has SPF included. They are lightweight and cover great without feeling heavy and most products have SPF between 15 and 30. Always opt for an oil-free foundation, because they are less likely to cause nasty breakouts or skin irritation. Simply reapply your chosen product every 40 to 80 minutes and always right after a swim.

Charm Away Problem Areas

Not always super happy with your butt or legs? Ladies, you’re not alone. I live an incredible healthy lifestyle, workout almost every day and still… I have some old marks from times where I wasn’t so concerned about my diet, but don’t let a little cellulite or stretch mark get you down. There is a simple trick you can use to camouflage them both. Enhance the skin by treating yourself to an all-over sugar scrub. This exfoliates dry dead skin cells and gets your whole body glowing. Finish your shower with cold water. This short freezing shock tones and energizes your skin. After that simply apply a cellulite cream to give your problem areas a firm boost, and finish up with a moisturizer to make you skin look super healthy and radiant.

Beachy Waves For Your Hair

Those of you who have tried to style your hair before going to the beach probably know that after a few minutes in a beach breeze or a dip in the ocean, all your effort was for nothing. However, I really love the beachy hair look. The dream of having the perfect beachy waves can come true without ending up as a gnarly nightmare. So what’s the trick to maintain waves at the beach? It’s the texture. My hair is purely straight and has no waves or curls at all. Luckily people like me can make our own DIY Beach Hair Spray (LINK SPRAY) — salt water gives great texture, it’s super easy to make, and it’s great for your hair. If you take a dip into the water at the beach always make sure to brush your hair with a wide-tooth comb as well and use a leave-in conditioner to prevent breakage. It’s also a great tip for beach boys, because you might not want waves, but you want healthy hair, right?

Accessorize

It’s uber easy: always match your accessories to your beachwear. Just because we’re heading to the beach or the pool doesn’t mean we have to leave our feeling for style at home. Pick a theme or color and stick with it (for example whenever Josh and I wear our patriotic American Flag Beachwear, we also combine the theme with fitting accessories - a white stone bracelet and red framed sunglasses for him, or my favorite super cute blue beach sandals for me, and if I’m fast enough, I can ‘borrow’ his favorite white baseball cap… I just love it!). Mix and match as much as you’d like, but decide for a specific look and add the final touches to your outfit.

No Bloating

So easy: Keep the lid on any bloating foods to get the flattest shape possible: Avoid salty chips and fast food, bubbly drinks, and dairy before your trip to the beach. Salty, high-fat foods are a one-way ticket to bloating and the last thing you need when you’re wearing minimal clothing. Bring healthy snacks like fruits, veggies, or almonds. Drink plenty of water to prevent water retention and pay attention to your posture. Simply stand straight to naturally slim your figure and remember that obvious hiding only calls attention to problem areas.

Groom Your Beach Body

For me, nothing boosts my beach body confidence more than some summertime grooming. Little things can go a long way and getting rid of some nasty body hair improves the way you look and feel in any swimsuit style. The skin can be very sensitive after waxing or shaving, and the sun, salt water, or chlorine water from a pool, can cause itchy irritations. So do your procedures at least a day before you plan to hit the sand.

Sun-Kissed Skin

Unfortunately, most tans disappear during the colder winter months and it usually takes some time in the sun or at a tanning studio to get that sexy sun-kissed look back. Why not try a self tanning spray or lotion to boost your appear? A self tanner makes you look healthier, will camouflage imperfections like cellulite and small wrinkles, and give you a nice healthy glow. Tans-in-a-bottle are easy to use for everybody if you follow a few simple rules: >> Apply your self tanner evenly across the face and body in long, swiping motions. >> Always use thin plastic gloves to ensure your hands don’t turn yellow for the next couple days. >> If you’re blond like me, cover your hair with a shower cap (most hotels offer them for free, just keep one of them for purposes like that). >> Use some body scrub and exfoliate the dry skin of your body, otherwise your tan gets stains. >> Moisturize the dry skin of your elbows and knees with body lotion before you apply the self tan product. A few weeks ago one of my lovely girlfriends recommended me to try the St. Moritz Instant Self Tanning Mist. used the medium bronzer and got the best results ever. It’s a fantastic product and surprisingly cheap as well.

Only Buy Flattering Beachwear

Bathing wear can be quite skimpy, but there are ways to make them work to your advantage. Everybody’s body is different and so it’s important to make sure you find the right beachwear for your body type and style. What do you want to flaunt and what should be covered up? Remember that big patterns always add pounds to your hips and bottom. It doesn’t matter if it’s a little bitty bikini for girls or shorts for guys, it should never be too tight. You can be in the shape of your life, but if the fabric doesn’t run smoothly along your hips it always looks like you have love handles. Nobody likes having love handles. No, no, no.

You Nailed it!

I don’t use this service very often, but getting a great pedicure or manicure from time to time always gives me a great feeling. Taking care of the appearance of your nails isn’t only a thing for girls. Honestly, I think Josh’s fingernails are in better shape than mine (shame on me!). I love completing my outfit with colorful nail polish and so I can hide my lapse a little bit. If you look down and see pretty nails and pretty feet, it makes you feel confident and in the end, it's not a lot of work at all.

Make It Waterproof

I truly don’t understand why I still see so many girls with their makeup running down their face when they spend time in the sun. Why are you doing that to yourself when it can be so easily avoided? If you must wear makeup, make it melt-proof. Waterproof makeup is your best friend on a hot day and gone are the days when you have to stress over whether or not to wear makeup to the beach. I personally like to stick to colors like peach and different gold or bronze shades because they compliment my tan the best.

From Day to Night

There would be so many more tips to give, but I think I should only add one more and this could be the most important one of all: Your daytime beach look should be easily transformed into a nighttime sundowner look. For the ladies: The easiest way to take your look from day to night is by adding a lip color (if you’re going to a party on the beach, lip glosses can be too sticky and you don’t want your hair getting stuck on your lips, right?), and swap flip flops for sandals or high heels. For the gents: Take a light linen shirt with you (it should of course fit the shorts), leave it in the car and transform your beach look into a stylish night look with just one fresh item. The saltwater and the wind gives your hair the perfect structure for a beachy night-look anyway, so simply put on a bright smile and go melt some hearts!
